Temazepam Tablets 20mg – Your Key to Restful Nights: Buy Temazepam 20mg Online

Temazepam is a prescription-only sleeping medicine from the benzodiazepine family. In the UK it is a controlled drug, prescribed for short periods to treat severe insomnia or to help people relax before an operation or procedure. Temazepam tablets come in 10mg and 20mg strengths.

This guide explains what temazepam is, how it works, usual doses, side effects, the risk of dependence, the law on temazepam in the UK, and other ways to treat poor sleep. It is general information, not medical advice. Always follow the instructions from your doctor or pharmacist and read the patient information leaflet.

What is temazepam?

Temazepam is a benzodiazepine, the same group of medicines as diazepam and lorazepam. It is a hypnotic, meaning it is used mainly to help you sleep.

How does temazepam work?

Temazepam boosts the effect of GABA, a natural chemical messenger that calms activity in the brain. This makes you feel drowsy and relaxed, helps you fall asleep and reduces waking in the night. It starts to work within about 30 to 60 minutes.

What is temazepam used for?

In the UK, temazepam is used for:

  • Short-term treatment of insomnia that is severe, disabling or causing extreme distress, when other approaches have not worked.
  • Premedication: helping people feel calmer before surgery or some medical procedures.

Temazepam is not a long-term treatment for sleep problems. Guidance from NICE and the British National Formulary (BNF) says benzodiazepines for insomnia should be used at the lowest dose that works, for the shortest time, usually no more than 2 to 4 weeks.

Temazepam vs diazepam: what’s the difference?

Both are benzodiazepines, but they are used differently:

  Temazepam Diazepam
Main use Short-term insomnia, premedication Short-term anxiety, muscle spasm, alcohol withdrawal, seizures
How long it lasts Short-acting (half-life about 8–15 hours) Long-acting (half-life 20–100 hours, including active breakdown products)
Next-day drowsiness Less likely More likely
UK legal status Class C, Schedule 3 controlled drug Class C, Schedule 4 controlled drug

“Is temazepam stronger than diazepam?” is a common question. They are not directly comparable by milligrams. Each is prescribed for different purposes and at different doses, so never swap one for the other.

Temazepam dosage

Your temazepam dose is decided by your prescriber and printed on your pharmacy label. Typical UK doses, based on the BNF, are:

Who Use Usual dose
Adults Insomnia 10mg–20mg at bedtime
Older adults and people who are frail Insomnia Usually 10mg at bedtime (lower doses because of a higher risk of falls and confusion)
Adults Before surgery or a procedure A single dose given by the medical team, usually 30–60 minutes before

Higher doses are used only in exceptional circumstances and only on medical advice. Temazepam is not usually prescribed for children.

How to take temazepam tablets

  • Take your dose shortly before you go to bed, with a glass of water.
  • Only take it when you can have a full night’s sleep (7–8 hours) before you need to be alert again.
  • Do not take more than your prescribed dose, and never take an extra dose in the same night.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking temazepam.
  • Keep your tablets locked away and out of the reach of others. It is illegal to give or sell your temazepam to anyone else.

What if I miss a dose?

If you forget to take temazepam at bedtime, skip the missed dose. Do not take it later in the night or double your next dose, as you may feel very drowsy the next day.

How long should you take temazepam for?

Usually no longer than 2 to 4 weeks, including the time needed to reduce the dose before stopping. Many people only need it for a few nights. Your prescriber should review you before any further prescription.

How long does temazepam stay in your system?

Temazepam has a half-life of about 8 to 15 hours, which means it takes around two to three days for most of it to leave the body. It can be detected in urine tests for longer, often several days and sometimes more after regular use. You may still feel its effects the next morning, especially at higher doses or if you are older.

Temazepam side effects

The most common temazepam side effects come from its sedative effect, and many carry over into the next day.

Common side effects of temazepam

  • Drowsiness or a “hangover” feeling the next morning
  • Dizziness, unsteadiness and slower reactions
  • Poor concentration and confusion
  • Memory problems, especially for events after taking a dose
  • Headache
  • Muscle weakness
  • Dry mouth or stomach upset

Older people are more likely to feel confused or unsteady and are at higher risk of falls and hip fractures.

Serious side effects: when to get medical help

Call 999 or go to A&E if someone taking temazepam:

  • has slow, shallow or difficult breathing
  • is very hard to wake, or cannot be woken
  • is severely confused, especially after drinking alcohol or taking other sedating medicines

Speak to a doctor promptly if you notice unusual behaviour, such as agitation, aggression or acting out of character (a “paradoxical” reaction), sleepwalking or doing things you don’t remember, or low mood or thoughts of harming yourself.

Report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

Temazepam addiction and dependence

Temazepam can be addictive. Your body can get used to it (tolerance) within a few weeks, so the same dose works less well, and you can become dependent on it physically and psychologically. The risk is higher with higher doses, longer use, and a history of alcohol or drug problems.

This is why temazepam is only prescribed for short periods and why it is a controlled drug.

Signs that temazepam use may be becoming a problem include needing more to get the same effect, running out early, worrying about not having it, or using it for reasons other than sleep. If you are worried, talk to your GP. Confidential help is also available from FRANK (0300 123 6600) and local NHS drug and alcohol services.

Temazepam withdrawal: how to stop safely

Do not stop suddenly if you have taken temazepam for more than a couple of weeks. Stopping abruptly can cause withdrawal symptoms, including:

  • rebound insomnia (sleep worse than before)
  • anxiety, restlessness and irritability
  • shaking, sweating and nausea
  • in rare cases after high doses or long use, confusion or seizures

Your GP can plan a gradual dose reduction (tapering). The pace depends on how long you have taken it and how you feel.

Temazepam interactions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you take. Temazepam can be dangerous when combined with:

  • Alcohol: increases drowsiness and the risk of breathing problems. Avoid alcohol completely.
  • Opioid painkillers (for example codeine, tramadol, morphine): the MHRA has warned that using them with benzodiazepines can cause profound sedation, breathing difficulties, coma and death.
  • Other sedating medicines: other sleeping tablets, some antihistamines, some antidepressants, antipsychotics, pregabalin and gabapentin.
  • Some medicines that slow how temazepam is broken down, such as certain antifungals and HIV medicines.

Who should not take temazepam?

Temazepam is not suitable for everyone. Tell your prescriber if you have breathing problems (such as COPD), sleep apnoea, myasthenia gravis, severe liver disease, a history of alcohol or drug misuse, depression or other mental health conditions, or if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Can you drive on temazepam?

Do not drive, cycle or use machinery if temazepam makes you drowsy, dizzy or slow to react, including the morning after a dose.

Temazepam is one of the medicines covered by UK drug-driving law, which sets a legal blood limit for it. It is an offence to drive with temazepam in your blood above that limit, unless you are taking it as prescribed and it is not affecting your driving. Keep your prescription or pharmacy label with you, and if in doubt, don’t drive.

Is temazepam a controlled drug in the UK?

Yes. Temazepam is a Class C drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and a Schedule 3 controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001. This means:

  • It is only available on prescription, and the prescription must meet extra legal requirements for controlled drugs.
  • A prescription for temazepam is valid for 28 days from the date on it.
  • Pharmacies must store temazepam in a locked controlled drugs cabinet.
  • Having temazepam without a prescription, or supplying it to someone else, is a criminal offence.

How is temazepam prescribed in the UK?

Most people who are prescribed temazepam get it from their GP, a hospital doctor, or before an operation. The prescriber will usually:

  • ask about your sleep, mental health, alcohol use and other medicines
  • check whether other causes of poor sleep (such as pain, anxiety, depression or sleep apnoea) need treating first
  • prescribe a small supply for a short time, with a plan for stopping

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) classes sedatives such as temazepam as high-risk medicines for online supply. A registered online service must not prescribe them from a questionnaire alone. It needs proper checks, such as confirming your identity, speaking with you directly, and accessing your records or contacting your GP. Websites that sell temazepam without these checks, or without a prescription, are operating illegally and may sell fake tablets. Check any online pharmacy on the GPhC register.

Alternatives to temazepam for insomnia

For most people with long-term sleep problems, sleeping tablets are not the first choice. Options your GP may suggest include:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I): recommended by NICE as the first treatment for long-term insomnia, available face to face or through approved digital programmes.
  • Better sleep habits: a regular wake-up time, limiting caffeine and alcohol, avoiding screens before bed, and keeping your bedroom dark and cool.
  • Treating the cause: for example pain, anxiety, depression, menopause symptoms or sleep apnoea.
  • Other medicines: in some cases a short course of a “Z-drug” (such as zopiclone) or, for long-term insomnia, daridorexant, which NICE recommends for some people when CBT-I has not worked or is not available.

Temazepam FAQs

Add these with the Rank Math FAQ block so they output FAQ schema.

What does temazepam do?

Temazepam slows down activity in the brain by boosting a calming chemical called GABA. This makes you drowsy and relaxed, helping you fall asleep and stay asleep.

How long does temazepam take to work?

Temazepam usually starts working within 30 to 60 minutes, which is why it is taken shortly before bed.

Is temazepam used for anxiety?

Temazepam is mainly used for short-term insomnia and before operations. It is not usually prescribed for daytime anxiety. Other treatments, including talking therapies and other medicines, are used for anxiety. Speak to your GP about what’s right for you.

Is temazepam 20mg a strong dose?

20mg is the usual upper dose for adults with insomnia, and 10mg is the usual dose for older adults. Only take the strength your prescriber has prescribed.

Can I drink alcohol with temazepam?

No. Alcohol increases temazepam’s sedative effects and the risk of dangerous breathing problems. Avoid alcohol completely while taking it.

Is temazepam addictive?

Yes, it can be. Tolerance and dependence can develop within a few weeks, which is why it is normally prescribed for 2 to 4 weeks at most and stopped gradually.

Can I buy temazepam without a prescription in the UK?

No. Temazepam is a Class C controlled drug. It is illegal to have it without a prescription, and any website or person offering it without one is acting illegally and may be selling fake or dangerous tablets.

Can I take temazepam if I’m pregnant?

Temazepam is not usually recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Taking it late in pregnancy can affect the baby after birth. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.
